The Australian Bureau of Statistics released its national marriage and divorce statistics for 2025 on 28 July 2026. The data paints an interesting picture of relationship trends across the country — and for those navigating separation or divorce, understanding these patterns can be a helpful reminder that you are far from alone.

Marriages in 2025

Australians are still saying yes — just slightly less often. A total of 118,804 marriages were registered in 2025, a 1.7% decrease from 2024. The most popular date to marry was 25 October 2025, with 2,035 couples choosing that Saturday to tie the knot. As in previous years, spring and autumn remain the most popular seasons for weddings, with Saturdays accounting for the overwhelming majority of ceremonies.

Divorces in 2025

Divorce numbers increased in 2025. A total of 49,158 divorces were granted across Australia, up 4.1% from the 47,216 granted in 2024 — comparable to 2022 figures. The crude divorce rate rose to 2.2 divorces per 1,000 people, up from 2.1 in 2024.

A few trends stand out from the data. The median duration of marriages from marriage to separation increased slightly to 9.4 years, up from 9.3 years in 2024. The median age at divorce also rose — to 47.3 years for males and 44.4 years for females. Divorce rates increased across all male age groups from 40–44 and older, and all female age groups from 35–39 and older, while rates fell slightly for both sexes in the 25–29 and 30–34 age groups.
