Australia’s migration program is one of the most closely watched policy areas each year  and for good reason. The allocation of permanent migration places directly affects skilled workers, families waiting to reunite, and businesses relying on international talent.

The Federal Government has now confirmed that the 2025–26 permanent Migration Program will be set at 185,000 places, maintaining the same level as 2024–25. But while the headline figure hasn’t shifted, there are important details worth noting.

Migration Program Breakdown

The Department of Home Affairs has outlined the composition of the 2025–26 program:

  • Skill stream: 132,200 places (around 71% of the program)

  • Family stream: 52,500 places (around 28% of the program)

  • Special Eligibility stream: 300 places

This balance continues to prioritise skilled migration, reflecting the Government’s push to address workforce shortages and strengthen Australia’s economic future.

What’s Changed?

The planning level numbers remain consistent with 2024–25, but there is one key adjustment:

  • The Global Talent and Distinguished Talent visa categories have been replaced by the National Innovation visa category.

This signals a policy shift towards fostering innovation and attracting individuals with skills in high-growth industries.

State and Territory Nomination Allocations

At this stage, the 2025–26 state and territory nomination allocations have not been released. These allocations are critical for applicants considering pathways such as the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) or the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491). Updates will be published once the states and territories receive their quotas.

What This Means for You

  • Skilled workers: With more than 130,000 places available, Australia remains committed to bringing in qualified professionals. However, competition is strong, so ensuring your application is accurate and complete is more important than ever.

  • Families: The Family stream allocation remains stable at 52,500 places. This provides ongoing opportunities for partners, parents, and children of Australian citizens and permanent residents to secure visas.

Businesses: The introduction of the National Innovation visa may create new opportunities to recruit international talent in key industries.
